  Welcoming Summer

Can you believe summer is here?  Either can we.  It seems like we just published the first issue of Fisheries Acoustics Quarterly with suggestions on how to get ready for the field season and more - and here we are, the summer issue.

As you know, we hope to keep you up-to-date with advances on fisheries research tools and trends.  This newsletter is designed to share research success stories, equipment news, tips for fisheries biologists, industry news, and relevant upcoming events.  We work to ensure each newsletter offers information you won’t easily find elsewhere.

And as always, I encourage you to share your feedback and insights.  Together we are innovation for the next generation of fisheries research tools.

Enjoy the summer season!

HTI is on the cusp of some exciting new advances in acoustic tag technology - the next generation of acoustic tag technology is coming.

With the recent advances in engineering techniques and manufacturing processes, acoustic tags are not only becoming smaller (0.5 grams), they also have a significantly increased life span compared to the existing Model 795 Acoustic Tags.  These unprecedented advances exceed the specifications of all known, commercially available acoustic tag technologies.

The new prototype HTI Model 800-series Acoustic Tags will be in-river testing later this year.

  The Winning Tips:
The Top 5 Tips Received from
Readers for Getting Field-Season Ready

Thanks to everyone that sent in their tips to the premier issue of FAQs!  There were some great ideas and pairing that list down was not as easy as I thought it would be. Here is what we selected as the top five tips from readers. Enjoy!

1. Jason Sweet at Bonneville Power Administration recommends making an inventory/packing list to keep during the study. He made notes of additional equipment that he wished he had with him, or had to purchase while in the field. When he returned, he updated the list and stored it so that he would have a checklist to assist in packing for the next trip.

2. Dr. David Stanley of Ontario Power Generation recommends packing along cable ties, silicone and when you are dealing with electronics a multimeter, for troubleshooting electronic gear.

3. John Dean at The Baruch Institute recommends Avon Skin-so-Soft as the most effective deterrent to no-see-ums, gnats, and most biting flies. It does not necessarily repel them - it makes it so they cannot get into the skin layer easily.

4. Mark Steingraeber at USFWS recommends self-cinching, UV resistant, nylon cable ties (e.g., GB electrical cable ties). They work almost as well as duct tape.

5 . Pat Bigelow at Yellowstone National Park recommends a shade to cut down on laptop screen glare during bright daylight hours. CompuShade screens affix directly to the laptop and make it easier to read your data.

Congrats to the winners and thanks again for your tips. They can help us all get a little better each season.
Hope your spring studies were successful and all is going swimmingly. up
Featurette: Getting to Know HTI
Corey Wright, Project Manager & Sr. Fisheries Biologist We are a diverse group of fisheries scientists, engineers, software designers, technicians, manufacturing and administration pros. Over the last 20 years, we have worked together all over the world and have built relationships along the way - with our clients, and colleagues, working together. Here is a little intro so you can get to know who we are a little better.

Corey Wright, Project Mgr. & Sr. Fisheries Biologist

Corey has been with HTI for about 3 years. Previously a scientist for USGS, he now works with the HTI Grant County PUD team on fisheries research using acoustic tags to determine juvenile salmonid survival and behavior around hydroelectric dams. He manages the HTI consulting team at the Grant County Project.

Hi Corey! Where are you from originally?

“Kokomo, Indiana USA (aka The Heartland).”

What do you love about your work?

“Working on great projects with great people all for the betterment of our natural resources.”

What is something people would never guess is part of life as a fisheries scientists?
“Installing hydrophones from the deck of a Korean War landing craft, as pictured in the photo above.”

What is your favorite fish and why?

“White sturgeon, because they are the prehistoric monsters of the Columbia River.”

Nice. Thanks Corey!
